The present contribution shows via authentic data analysis that the argumentative function of explanation is at task in mother-child relationship. In such a context, it does certainly matter whether a child is able to reason not in order to act, but in order to select relevant features, create temporal and causal links, and form categories and produce the right examples. All of these intellectual activities are practiced in mother-child interactions during book reading; this is one of the very first contexts where language Is used to show and exploit knowledge.
