The essay identifies, through the presence or absence of some phonetic and morphological phenomena in texts produced between XVII and XVIII centuries, different varieties of written Italian, determined by the social class and the education of the writers, but also by the communicative situation. The acceptance or exclusion of some linguistic phenomena allows us to perceive in the writers a deeper awareness of Italian language and its varieties, confirming a knowledge of the unitary language much more widespread than once believed.

Abstract

The essay identifies, through the presence or absence of some phonetic and morphological phenomena in texts produced between XVII and XVIII centuries, different varieties of written Italian, determined by the social class and the education of the writers, but also by the communicative situation. The acceptance or exclusion of some linguistic phenomena allows us to perceive in the writers a deeper awareness of Italian language and its varieties, confirming a knowledge of the unitary language much more widespread than once believed.
