The ‘Estoria de España’, compiled under the supervision of Alfonso X el Sabio, draws more on ‘cantares’ and epic poems than its Latin predecessors. When both the prosified version and a poetic text, similar to the one used for the transposition, are available, as in the case of ‘Mio Cid’, a side-by-side comparison can reveal gaps and highlight the process of filtration, re-reading and ideological adaptation the Alphonsine and post-Alphonsine scribes carried out, bearing in mind that the divergences between the two texts may reflect different historical moments. This paper aims at re-examining, in the light of recent acquisitions, the chronicle rendition of two episodes from the primitive ‘Cantar’: the Cid’s plan to deceive Raquel and Vidas and the imprisonment of the Count of Barcelona.
