This paper aims at making the point of the present situation in Medieval Scandinavian studies in Italy, especially concerning saga - texts and their translation into Italian. After illustrating some important contributions of scholars in this particular field, I pass to examine a few aspects worth of being analysed and deepened. As an example, I consider the role played by the mythological and heroic world transmitted through Eddic poetry and reused in Íslendingasögur characters and plots in order to preserve and remind people of the old free state values as a political strategy against the Norwegian monarchy’s power and culture.

Abstract

This paper aims at making the point of the present situation in Medieval Scandinavian studies in Italy, especially concerning saga - texts and their translation into Italian. After illustrating some important contributions of scholars in this particular field, I pass to examine a few aspects worth of being analysed and deepened. As an example, I consider the role played by the mythological and heroic world transmitted through Eddic poetry and reused in Íslendingasögur characters and plots in order to preserve and remind people of the old free state values as a political strategy against the Norwegian monarchy’s power and culture.
