Abstract

The essay outlines how Hölderlin’s conception of ‘Tragic” can lead to an interesting interlace of Aesthetics and Politics. First of all because of the political and not only poetic value of the ‘natural’ Bildungstrieb looking for a legacy of mimesis able to contain the ideal in the particular, the general in the singular: a legacy balancing extremes in the form of the poem. On the other hand because of association and joining of the power of aesthetical image with Hölderlin’s effort to re-think Enlightenment through a linkage between ‘rational form’ of work of art and the tragical poet’s skill to make characters ‘representative’ of clashing powers and to introduce new ethical and political ‘words’, fulfilling in particular the modern call for equality
