The aim of this article is to illustrate the contemporary Islamic debate on Muslim minorities in the West. The methodology followed is the analysis, in chronological order, of works published between 1950 and 2000 that deal with this issue. In this way it has been possible to trace the different stages this debate has gone through and the changes that the concept of Islamic minority has had during the period analysed and, furthermore, the impact that these changes have had on the matter of actions by which Muslims could reach the observance of Islamic law while being a minority in a non-Islamic country.
