The present study is devoted to the contrastive analysis of the so-called markers of approximation quasi and почти that has still not been sufficiently explored. Starting from their lexical meaning codified in the dictionary entries, we show three common meanings that we have defined as approximative, proximative and attenuative. We also show that most of similarities and differences can be explained by the etymology of two words and by the cognitive path, leading to the current meanings. The tendency to actualize markers of approximation in the modern languages is demonstrated by the analysis of some translation choices in the modern versions of the Bible.

Abstract

The present study is devoted to the contrastive analysis of the so-called markers of approximation quasi and почти that has still not been sufficiently explored. Starting from their lexical meaning codified in the dictionary entries, we show three common meanings that we have defined as approximative, proximative and attenuative. We also show that most of similarities and differences can be explained by the etymology of two words and by the cognitive path, leading to the current meanings. The tendency to actualize markers of approximation in the modern languages is demonstrated by the analysis of some translation choices in the modern versions of the Bible.
