The death of Tiberius was not natural. Ancient historiography shifted responsibility for this either to Caligula or to Q.Naevius Sutorius Macro (Macron) in different ways. This latter was praefectus vigilum and, after the overthrow of Seianus, praefectus of the praetorium. Macron had a complex personality, as it emerges from the flattering portrait of Philo of Alexandria: during the early years of Caligula’s reign, he was his adviser, but after having fallen out of emperor’s favor, he committed suicide together with his wife. Evidences of his fortune as well as downfall can be traced among the monuments of his native city, Alba Fucens.
