The article intends to illustrate the contribution of Antonio Gramsci to the development of a philosophy of language within the Marxist tradition. In this perspective, it examines the marginal position of the language sphere in the thought of Hegel and Marx, and describes the peculiar position of the Italian philosopher Antonio Labriola, who elaborated the philosophy of language of Wilhelm von Humboldt, and the “Volkpsychologie” of Heymann Steinthal, in a historical materialistic direction.
