The paper focuses on the elements shared by the phenomenological and the aesthetological description of atmospheres, on the one hand and geographic studies, on the other. Consequently, the authors performed a critical re-reading of the atmospheres ‘of’ Geography, that is to say the concepts that have become the very heritage of the discipline. The occasion seemed to be also suitable for re-thinking the materiality of the discipline, i.e. atmospheres ‘in’ Geography, which are in turn the outcome of a reflection on the specific aspects of the discipline and on the re-discovery of the concept that in the last decade has characterised a major part of the new cultural Geography.

Abstract

Atmosphere - Atmospheres - Geography
Book series: Atmospheric Spaces, n. 3. As part of the book series “Atmospheric Spaces”, this volume analyses a new phenomenological and aesthetic paradigm based on the notion of the "Atmosphere", conceived as a feeling spread out into the external space rather than as a private mood. The idea of "Atmosphere" is here explored from different perspectives and disciplines, in the context of a full valorization of the so-called “affective turn” in Humanities.
