Abstract

The Silk Road was not only a network of trade routes, also knowledge, ideas, technologies and new practices travelled along its course. This is especially evident in visual arts, which show how different and far distant sites adopted and adapted the same iconographic, architectural and technical patterns. The article examines some emblematic case studies from modern day Pakistan, Afghanistan and Xinjiang in a period stretching from the early centuries CE to the 7th/8th century CE.
