Verga and Pirandello belong to the major figures of the Italian literary tradition. Born in Sicily, they exported their conception to the rest of the peninsula with globally appreciated results. Pirandello wrote about Verga for his precursor’s eightieth birthday and repeated the speech on several occasions, as he never forgot his debt. In this paper, certain common elements that characterize both authors’ works are examined, with particular reference to the main characters of some texts by Verga and Pirandello. Their personality, in fact, is an example of ineptness ahead of time, sentencing them to a life of suffering in a world that is confronted with the first signs of modernity. In this respect, Mattia Pascal is configured as an heir of Verga’s protagonists; like them, he cannot handle his family life and is unable to change his condition.

Abstract
In this respect, Mattia Pascal is configured as an heir of Verga’s protagonists; like them, he cannot handle his family life and is unable to change his condition.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
