Wael Kadour e l’inconfessabile verità che solo lo specchio teatrale può rivelare

Intertextuality is a key element in the play The Confession (2013, latest version 2018), by Wael Kadour, who has chosen Death and the Maiden (Ariel Dorfman, 1992) as a play-within-the-play and from it has also taken inspiration for the plot of his own play. As well as this, the setting and details of characterization are derived from Mustafa Khalifa’s prison journal (The Shell, 2007). Studied from the perspective of intertextuality, and so compared to the texts that have inspired it, The Confession reveals its main topics – the victim/perpetrator frame and the confession – in all their complexity. With its references to a preexistent text and to metatheatre, intertextuality reflects on the roles that one has not always chosen to play and acts as a mirror revealing confessions that, in order to be true, cannot be extorted.

L’intertestualità è un elemento fondamentale dell’opera teatrale La confessione (2013, ultima versione 2018) di Wael Kadour. Scegliendo La morte e la fanciulla di Ariel Dorfmann (1992) come pièce nella pièce recitata dai personaggi attori, Kadour ne trae ispirazione anche per la trama della sua opera, alla quale aggiunge dettagli e ambientazione derivati, invece, dal diario di prigionia di Mustafa Khalifa (La conchiglia, 2007). Se studiata nell’ottica dell’intertestualità, e cioè in rapporto alle opere che l’hanno ispirata, La confessione rivela i suoi temi principali - il rapporto vittima/carnefice e la confessione - in tutta la loro complessità. L’intertestualità, con i suoi rimandi a un testo esistente e al metateatro, riflette sul gioco delle parti e agisce come specchio rivelatore di una confessione che, per essere reale, non può essere estorta.
