Decorazioni parietali di ambito domestico a Pompei in età tardosannitica: le pitture a schema semplice. Un’alternativa alle decorazioni di I stile.

During the second half of the II c. B.C., besides the decorations of the First Style, in Pompeian houses there were paintings characterized by a decorative scheme simpler than the ones with orthostats and ashlars. They constituted a more sober and cheaper type of decoration, alternative to the paintings of the First Style, chosen for poorer contexts, or for rooms not accessible to the majority in high status houses. In this paper, the stylistic characteristics of the Simple Scheme paintings and their use in relation to the function of the rooms will be studied. The examples analyzed are from contexts discovered during stratigraphic investigations or still preserved in the city at the time of the eruption. Finally, a look outside the Vesuvian context will be taken. Some cases in which paintings with a simpler scheme are used in the domestic environment, as an alternative to Masonry Style decorations, will be objet of analysis.
