The paper deals with a logical procedure employed by Galen in his surgical commentaries, in order to describe the mechanisms for diagnosing diseases according to their severity. this complex process, during which the physician brings to bear not only his intellect but also his senses, is formalised by Galen for the use of his students, also through the use of examples taken from the daily practice of medicine.
