The commentary on De alimento, published in 1576 in the Giunta edition of Galen’s works edited by Girolamo Mercuriale, has been acknowledged by scholars as a forgery by Giovan Battista Rasario, a well-known physician and Greek scholar who had previously edited a Latin edition of Galen (Venice, 1562-1563). This contribution aims to describe and analyse a large specimen of the text edited by Rasario (commentary on ch. 17 of De alimento), pointing out some of the sources used for the forgery and proposing some reflections on the method of composition of the text.

Abstract

The commentary on De alimento, published in 1576 in the Giunta edition of Galen’s works edited by Girolamo Mercuriale, has been acknowledged by scholars as a forgery by Giovan Battista Rasario, a well-known physician and Greek scholar who had previously edited a Latin edition of Galen (Venice, 1562-1563). This contribution aims to describe and analyse a large specimen of the text edited by Rasario (commentary on ch. 17 of De alimento), pointing out some of the sources used for the forgery and proposing some reflections on the method of composition of the text.
