All'ombra degli Stati Uniti: le relazioni tra Cile ed Israele fra armi e diplomazia (1973-80)

The essay aims to describe and analyze the ties that were produced between Israel and Chile of the Military Junta that was established after the 1973 coup, between the year in question and 1980. The objective it is to shed light not only on the complex relationship that existed between the nations in question, but also, more generally, on the system of relations in which various Latin American states were placed in the spaces left ‘open’ by the United States in the region. The work is mainly based on the use of primary sources; such as, for example, the Chilean diplomatic documentation, the declassified documents of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the collection of US documents Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) and other material kept in the National Security Archive. However, secondary sources are also used, such as the annual reports on military expeditions and the sale of arms produced by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) and the United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (USACDA), as well as the limited scientific production on this issue.

Il saggio si propone di descrivere e analizzare i legami che si produssero tra Israele e il Cile della Giunta militare che si costituì dopo il colpo di Stato del 1973, in un arco temporale compreso tra l’anno in questione e il 1980. L’obiettivo è quello di far luce non solo sul complesso rapporto che intercorse tra le due nazioni, ma anche, più in generale, sul sistema di relazioni in cui i vari Stati latinoamericani andarono a collocarsi negli spazi lasciati “aperti” dagli Stati Uniti nella regione. Il lavoro si basa principalmente sull’utilizzo di fonti primarie, come, ad esempio, la documentazione diplomatica cilena, i documenti declassificati della Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), la documentazione del Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) e altro materiale custodito nel National Security Archive. Si è fatto ricorso, tuttavia, anche a fonti secondarie, come i rapporti annuali sulle spedizioni militari e sulla vendita di armamenti realizzati dallo Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) o dalla United States Arms Control and Disarmament Agency (USACDA), e la limitata produzione scientifica esistente sul tema.
