Antonio Gramsci represents, without any doubt, a reference author in Tullio De Mauro’s writings. More specifically, this article aims to describe the essays dedicated by De Mauro to the linguistic thought of Gramsci and tries to draw a route for the reading of them: the different aspects of Gramsci’s reflection on language are investigated by De Mauro in different moments of his civil engagement and the more general development of the Italian culture. As a result, his numerous papers can be read as the successive chapters of a complex and articulated study.
