"«Todo hombre tiene derecho a ser persona». Un simposio internazionale sui diritti umani nel Cile di Pinochet"

The International Symposium on Human Rights La Iglesia y la dignidad del hombre, sus derechos y deberes en el mundo de hoy was held in Chile in November 1978, and it was the final event of the cycle of initiatives carried out in the so-called “year of human rights in Chile”. For the first time since the coup d’etat of 1973, which had paved the way for the ferocious dictatorship led by General Augusto Pinochet, the theme of human rights (and of their violation) was publicly put on the table. It was a victory for Archbishop Raúl Silva Henríquez and, above all, for the women and men of the Vicaría de la Solidaridad. An event that the military had found it impossible to prevent and that subsequently they would not have been able to submit to their control. These elements called into question the serious crisis that the civic-military regime was going through in that year, probably the deepest crisis that the dictatorship had ever faced since the coup.

Nel novembre del 1978 si teneva in Cile il Simposio internazionale sui diritti umani La Iglesia y la dignidad del hombre, sus derechos y deberes en el mundo de hoy, evento conclusivo del ciclo di iniziative realizzate nel cosiddetto “anno dei diritti umani in Cile”. Per la prima volta dal colpo di Stato del 1973, che aveva spianato la strada alla feroce dittatura capitanata dal generale Augusto Pinochet, veniva pubblicamente messo sul tavolo il tema dei diritti umani (e della loro violazione). Si trattava di una vittoria dell’arcivescovo Raúl Silva Henríquez e, soprattutto, delle donne e degli uomini della Vicaría de la Solidaridad. Un evento che i militari si erano trovati nell’impossibilità di impedire e che, successivamente, non sarebbero stati in grado di sottoporre al proprio controllo. Elementi, questi, che a loro volta chiamavano in causa la grave crisi che stava attraversando il regime civico-militare in quell’anno, probabilmente la crisi più profonda che la dittatura avesse mai affrontato dal golpe.
