This article approaches the topic of „revolution“ in the 20th and 21st century China by focusing on Lu Xun’s novel “The true story of Ah Q” and its many dramatic and theatrical adaptations. By discussing a number of plays from the 1920s until recent times, it shows that Ah Q’s revolution is interpreted very differently on the stages of different times. In this paper I describe some of the main forms of interpretation as well as their interconnections with the respective present.
