The Greek god names Κύπρις and Ἶρις are originally individualizing i-stem derivatives built on adjectives in *-ro- to the Indo-European roots *keu̯p- ‘to experience a strong feeling(/desire)’ and *u̯ei̯h1 - ‘to be eager, strive’. Furthermore, Ἶρις may be traced back to the same root as Vedic Vená- (“Seeker”), whose description in Rigveda 10.123 matches that of the Greek goddess.
