In Hymn. Merc. 415 πῦρ ἀμαρύσσων has to be corrected to πῦρ ἀμαρύσσоν. This expression applies to Hermes’ powerful gaze. At the same time, the sequence Ἀργεϊφόντης … πῦρ ἀμαρύσσων “Argeiphontes … darting fire” (Hymn. Merc. 414-415) is likely to have been influenced by a synchronic etymology of Hermes’ epithet Argeiphontes. As such, it counts as an example of synonymic dittology. An analysis of ancient commentaries and glossaries shows that the second compound member °φόντης was occasionally connected with Gk. φαίνω, “to shine”.

Abstract

In Hymn.
