The article examines the political actions of David IV the Builder, the King of Georgia between 1089 and 1125, on the basis of mainly historical-narrative sources in Georgian, Armenian and Arabic. We specifically consider the ruler’s attitude towards diversity, attempting to establish whether and how the category of tolerance, and the various forms it takes in the history of nations, can be applied to it. The article argues that David’s tolerance was a spontaneous and far-sighted concession of freedom by an enlightened ruler, albeit within the framework of a monarchy founded on divine right.

Abstract
The article examines the political actions of David IV the Builder, the King of Georgia between 1089 and 1125, on the basis of mainly historical-narrative sources in Georgian, Armenian and Arabic. We specifically consider the ruler’s attitude towards diversity, attempting to establish whether and how the category of tolerance, and the various forms it takes in the history of nations, can be applied to it. The article argues that David’s tolerance was a spontaneous and far-sighted concession of freedom by an enlightened ruler, albeit within the framework of a monarchy founded on divine right.File in questo prodotto:
