In some Swedish naturmytiska visor, magic of transformation is presented according to a fixed narrative structure, which presents three main tale roles: victims of transformation spells, operators of transformation spells and those who break spells. The first role is always played by young girls and boys, often referred to as jungfruar and svenner (not yet married young women and men). Tale roles of the second type, i.e. spell casters, are always embodied by female figures, old witches or wicked stepmothers, with a frequent overlapping of roles. To the third type of tale roles different types of characters may correspond, very often connected to the first group through ties of kinship or love. In these ballads, the magic of transformation may be read from a symbolic perspective, as a passage from childhood to adulthood, thus providing precious information about gender and ageing.
In alcune naturmytiska visor svedesi, la magia di trasformazione è narrata secondo una struttura narrativa fissa, che presenta tre attanti principali: le vittime degli incantesimi, gli operatori di incantesimi e coloro che spezzano gli incantesimi. Il primo attante è sempre interpretato da giovani ragazze o ragazzi, spesso chiamati jungfruar e svenner (giovani donne e uomini non ancora sposati). Gli attanti del secondo tipo, cioè gli artefici di incantesimi, sono sempre incarnati da figure femminili, vecchie streghe o matrigne malvagie, con una frequente sovrapposizione di ruoli. Al terzo tipo di attanti possono corrispondere diversi tipi di personaggi, molto spesso legati al primo gruppo da vincoli di parentela o d’amore. In queste ballate, la magia di trasformazione può essere letta in chiave simbolica, come passaggio dall’infanzia all’età adulta, fornendo così preziose informazioni su temi quali gender e ageing.
