This article deals with the theme of the survival of the Jesuit order in the territory of Tsarist Russia after the papal suppression of 1773. Based on manuscript sources preserved in the ecclesiastical archives of Rome and Krakow, but also in relation to the published literature on the subject, the text offers a systematic and synthetic look at the reasons that led the various heroes of these events—from the religious figures to Catherine II—to support the survival of the order in Russia. In particular, the article examines and illustrates the communication strategies used by the Jesuits and their diversification according to their recipients; moreover, it proposes a reflection on the ways in which the sons of St. Ignatius tried to maintain and secure their own identity, for example at the educational level.
