As a major financial and trading center of the modern and contemporary world, the Netherlands has suffered from banking and financial crises related to price fluctuations in commodities or consumer goods traded or financed by its merchant bankers and financial intermediaries. These crises featured in both modern financial crises and economic downturns that hit the country during the modern era and the twentieth century. Following this trajectory of economic crises in the Netherlands, this contribution focuses on the tulip boom and bust of the seventeenth century and the post‐World War II banking crisis that hit the Dutch financial system hard.
