The aim of the contribution is to draw a general picture of Rhodes in the period when it was involved in the colonization of Phaselis on the coast of Lycia (691/690 BC) and Gela on the southern coast of Sicily (689/688 BC). In particular, the aim is to reconstruct, mainly through the archaeological evidence, the opening of the island to other components active in trade between the eastern Mediterranean, the Aegean, and southern Italy in order to widen the frame of reference of the Rhodian colonial phenomenon. The first aspect examined is the forms of individuality and mutuality that characterized the three poleis of Rhodes between the 8th and 6th centuries BC. Next, the external relations established by Rhodes are analyzed through the archaeological contexts of the island and those of other regions affected by the Rhodian colonial phenomenon. The picture that emerges is that, behind the foundations of Phaselis and Gela, the Rhodian network and the early relations established by the island’s three poleis with Crete and Euboea stand out.

Abstract
The picture that emerges is that, behind the foundations of Phaselis and Gela, the Rhodian network and the early relations established by the island’s three poleis with Crete and Euboea stand out.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
