Abstract: The paper will provide an outline of the ltalian educational system, described from a diachronic perspective, with a focus on higher education reforms and their effect on the teaching of English as a foreign language at tertiary level. Since present day ltalian University English language teaching and learning cannot be fully understood without taking into consideration students'foreign language entry level competence, school reforms will also be briefly mentioned.
