This article aims at providing an insight into the variety of instruments that sociology can and does borrow from other fields of intellectual output, such as literature and television series. In particular, we focus on the sophisticated narrative artifice known as heteronomy to present a set of comparisons that will highlight how heteronomy fits into the broader debate on the general use of storytelling as a suitable tool for social research. The ultimate purpose of this article is to demonstrate that heteronomy could contribute to the revision of categories specific to sociology through one of its most crucial concepts: identity.

Abstract

This article aims at providing an insight into the variety of instruments that sociology can and does borrow from other fields of intellectual output, such as literature and television series. In particular, we focus on the sophisticated narrative artifice known as heteronomy to present a set of comparisons that will highlight how heteronomy fits into the broader debate on the general use of storytelling as a suitable tool for social research. The ultimate purpose of this article is to demonstrate that heteronomy could contribute to the revision of categories specific to sociology through one of its most crucial concepts: identity.
