This paper presents some preliminary reflections on three aspects of the Meiji Centennial, the national jubilee held in 1968 to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the Meiji Restoration: intergenerational rhetoric; the peculiar role played by the two peripheries of the archipelago with their absence (Okinawa), or enhanced presence (Hokkaidō's "double centennial"); the teleological nature of the dominant narrative supported by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
