Islamic Communities in Piazza Garibaldi. New Religious and Urban Landscapes in a Changing Naples · As known, the presence of Muslim communities in contemporary Italy is the result of the great migration from Islamic-majority countries as well as subsequent historical developments that are settlements and reproductions that only partially move away from transnational mobility. Mobility, migration processes, and migrants themselves have triggered a huge transformation of urban and societal landscapes in Italian cities that has been examined for a long time by geographers and socio-anthropologists. In the last decade of the xx century, a certain amount of scientific interest began to develop around these kinds of changes in Naples, resulting in a substantial academic production. However, religious studies have yet to produce scholarly works on these topics. This paper aims to reflect on changes in religious and urban landscapes in Naples triggered by Muslim communities during the last decades by combining different disciplinary perspectives. If on the one hand, the geography approach helps us to trace a general historical trajectory of urban, social, and policy transformations, on the other hand, the Islamic studies approach allows us to integrate the proper religious elements into the analysis by considering the Muslim communities’ agency.

Abstract
If on the one hand, the geography approach helps us to trace a general historical trajectory of urban, social, and policy transformations, on the other hand, the Islamic studies approach allows us to integrate the proper religious elements into the analysis by considering the Muslim communities’ agency.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
