Abstract

Johanna Sinisalo, a contemporary Finnish author rewrites the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, in her novel Sankarit (The Heroes, 2003), placing the mythical characters in contemporary Finnish society. Among many other themes, the novel joins current debates on the new roles of women and new forms of masculinity. This article focuses on the relationship between the three characters in the novel. Oona and Rex are the product of our fast-paced lifestyle, and Auroora is their daughter. Oona and Rex make choices similar to their mythological counterparts (Aino, Väinämöinen), but through the figures of the three heroes Sinisalo combines the innovative power of water with the great dogma of Christianity, the coming of the new kingdom, through which the novel offers a feminist reading.
