The research dedicated to Carlo Levi holds a prominent place in the rich and complex scholarly production of art historian Pia Vivarelli (1945- 2008). This essay aims to shed light on how Vivarelli, through writings, inter- ventions, and exhibitions, has contributed to building and disseminating a broader knowledge of the artist based on a rigorous study of his works and archival materials. Far from usual interpretative patterns, this decisive process, which started in 1983 and continued during her presidency of the Levi Foun- dation (1995-2004), has imprinted a new direction to consider and to exhibit the artist’s painting production.
