Through the analysis of the speech that José Martí delivered in New York in 1889 in honor of the Cuban poet José María Heredia y Heredia, we propose to analyse the rhetorical characteristics of Martí’s discourse that is inserted, from an aesthetic point of view, in the framework of the Modernism of the late 19th century. Furthermore, we aim at highlighting how the author of Nuestra América, who proposes himself as an ideologist of the American utopia of modernity, seeks to represent and found a new community by creating a new national and continental imaginary. Methodologically, we will focus mainly on the most 278 recent studies related to argumentation theory and those related to the critical discourse analysis.
