Scannagiudei. Appunti su un toponimo e su un cognome infelice

This contribution sheds light on an early medieval Neapolitan odonym, Scannagiudei, which in the past sparked hypotheses of anti-Jewish pogroms that, in reality, never occurred. It is shown that the name is related to the family of the same name, who were likely the owners of a palace there. The origin of the surname—which shares a common structure with other mostly Southern Italian surnames featuring the 'scanna-' element—probably stems from a specific event involving an ancestor of the family.

Il contributo fa luce su un odonimo della Napoli altomedievale, Scannagiudei, sul quale in passato sono state formulate ipotesi di pogrom antiebraici, in realtà mai avvenuti. Si dimostra che il nome è da porre in relazione all'omonima famiglia, probabilmente proprietaria di un palazzo.
