Within the field of linguistic studies, reflection on the features that characterise oral language constitutes an extremely broad area of research, open to multiple lines of inquiry. Analytical perspectives range from the observation of prosodic features – such as stress, tone, articulation, intonation and rhythm – to more specifically sociolinguistic approaches which take the social and situational context into account. Particularly from the late nineteenth century onwards, and especially during the Naturalist period, colloquial forms of oral language began to appear with increasing frequency in literature as a result of a process of democratisation of literature The progressive incorporation of orality into writing became a stylistic device aimed at reproducing the linguistic forms of the “parole vive” (Meizoz 2015: 16), giving rise to what Luzzati and Luzzati (1987: 15) define as “style oralisé”. This thesis aims to analyse the linguistic and stylistic mechanisms through which lexical and syntactic constructions typical of oral language are employed in contemporary literary texts (2000-2020), with particular attention to their morphosyntactic, sociolinguistic and narratological dimensions. More specifically, the corpus consists of a selection of novels representative of the linguistic phenomena under investigation, drawn from the works of three writers on the contemporary literary scene: Virginie Despentes, with the Vernon Subutex trilogy (Volumes I and II, 2015; Volume III, 2017); Chloé Delaume, with her novel Le Cri du sablier, published in 2001; and Anne F. Garréta, with Dans l’béton (2017).
