Il sostrato artistico-letterario dell’impegno civile del primo Sonnino. Un percorso tra i salotti fiorentini e i circoli macchiaioli

This essay reconstructs the intellectual formation of Sidney Sonnino in the years following his brief diplomatic experience in Europe, highlighting the breadth of his cultural horizons. His engagement with European economic thought and with de-bates advocating a more active role for the state in regulating economic life helped shape his vision of bridging the gap between institutions and society. At the same time, Sonnino’s formation was deeply influenced by the dual environment of post-unification Florence. On one side stood the salon of Emilia Peruzzi, where political and literary networks intertwined; on the other, the more democratic and artistically engaged world of the Macchiaioli, whose commitment to representing social reality offered an alternative model of cultural militancy. Within this framework, an analysis of Sonnino’s only novella, Donna Maria, reveals an unexpected narrative experiment. The text reflects a shift from late Romantic sensibilities toward a more analytical and quasi-scientific approach to reality, suggesting a transition to a positivist mindset consistent with Sonnino’s broader intellectual and political trajectory.
