This paper aims to analyze the representation of social violence through the use of the Gothic in Mariana Enriquez's short stories. To this end, it will first define the role of a renewed realism in Spanish-American literature between the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly in the work of Roberto Bolaño. Subsequently we will consider, from a biopolitical theoretical framework supported by the studies of Foucault, Agamben and Frye, the conceptual axis that allows to read the Gothic at the frontier between the protection and annihilation of life with the activation of a paranoid conscience. Finally, having established the corpus selection methodology, the article will focus on the short stories “Bajo el agua negra”, “El chico sucio” (from Lo que perdimos en el fuego, 2017) and “Rambla triste” (from Los peligros de fumar en la cama, 2009) to define the realist elements in the literary proposal of the Argentinian author.
