This book deals with the "Tale of Hong Kiltong" (attributed to Ho Kyun), which is considered the first, authentic classic novel in Korean Literature. The book is divided in two parts. The first part analyzes the political-social value of the novel, the question of the attribution to Ho Kyun and the philological problem. The second part includes a conplete translation (with footnotes) of the novel from th original work in Korean. Readers also are provided with the full text in Korean. In conclusion, Riotto refuses to see the "Tale of Hong Kiltong" as a truly revolutionary work: as a matter of fact, the political model proposed by Ho Kyun is nothing but the already well-known Confucian State. In this regard, the main character of the novel eventually refrain from continuing his political fight in Korea and he fled to an immaginary island where himself will raise a State founded on Confucian principles but managed by virtuous men.
