The relationship between the burials and the settlement in the case of the early iron age Athens seems to be still uncertain, due to the limits of the available archaeological data regarding the structural remains and their contextual setting, as well as to the preliminary character of the publications, generally giving a only a broad functional and chronological evaluation. This situation has favoured the turning to a speculative approach, based on the literary sources. The A. presents a general review of the archaeological record, examined in relation with the environmental main features of the Asty area: both in the northern side, including the Kerameikos agora (whose aspect in the 7th c. BC is reconstructed), where the Eridanos ran through, and in the southern one, where the Ilissos flew, the burials and the settlement remains appear to be imbricated. The various communities settled down all around the Acropolis, contributing the rise of the Athenian polis, reveal, in the medium term, a substantial attachment to their own burial grounds.

Abstract
The various communities settled down all around the Acropolis, contributing the rise of the Athenian polis, reveal, in the medium term, a substantial attachment to their own burial grounds.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
