The history of education - left so far largely aside by africanistic historiography - does not represents a secondary aspect of colonial Eritrean history. In retracing the steps of Italian educational policy and practices in Eritrea, both fascist and Liberal, this paper aims to highlight some of the most significant turning points, analysing trends and content, highlighting the role of missionaries, as they were responsible for almost all the schools in the colony; uncovering the relationship, not always smooth and easy, between missionary societies and colonial administration and documenting the Eritrean response to opportunities offered by the introduction of a Western-style educational system.

Abstract
The history of education - left so far largely aside by africanistic historiography - does not represents a secondary aspect of colonial Eritrean history. In retracing the steps of Italian educational policy and practices in Eritrea, both fascist and Liberal, this paper aims to highlight some of the most significant turning points, analysing trends and content, highlighting the role of missionaries, as they were responsible for almost all the schools in the colony; uncovering the relationship, not always smooth and easy, between missionary societies and colonial administration and documenting the Eritrean response to opportunities offered by the introduction of a Western-style educational system.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
