This paper deals with inscriptions in the Emir Sunqur al-Sa'di’s mausoleum, built in Cairo in the 8th century H. After surveying the historical sources, from al-Maqrizi to Ali Mubarak, the epigraphic texts on both the external and inner surface of the dome are investigated. Beside Quranic verses (in particular 2:255, “the Throne”), passages from al-Haririr's Maqamat, carved in two stucco friezes in fine thuluth mamluki script, are found. The inscriptions on the wooden cenotaph bear the name of the builder of the mausoleum and the madrasa, Sunqur al-Sa'di, the name of shaykh Sadaqa whose remains are actually buried beneath it, and the date 715 (1315). Three marble slabs of various origin and age are also examined.

Abstract
Three marble slabs of various origin and age are also examined.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
