This paper deals with the functions of the temple of Apollo Delphinios at Dreros, which was excavated by S. Marinatos during 1935. The temple was established together with its cult statues - the well-known sphyrelata - as early as the end of the 8th century BC. It is still an "hybrid", because it is a very early Greek temple and because of its specific Cretan features. It already assumes the "classical" function as the house of the cult images, but it is still the "enclosure" where the civic sacrifice is performed around the central eschara-hearth.

Abstract

This paper deals with the functions of the temple of Apollo Delphinios at Dreros, which was excavated by S. Marinatos during 1935. The temple was established together with its cult statues - the well-known sphyrelata - as early as the end of the 8th century BC. It is still an "hybrid", because it is a very early Greek temple and because of its specific Cretan features. It already assumes the "classical" function as the house of the cult images, but it is still the "enclosure" where the civic sacrifice is performed around the central eschara-hearth.
