The aim of the paper is to focus some problematic and methodological insights that emerge from the comparison between theoretical approaches and empirical reality with respect to local development. It is also developed a reflection on the traditional approach to Southern Italy, on development policies for the South and on the endogenous development model. It points out in particular the difficulty of applying the classical categories of development in the South and the necessity of using a non-traditional approach.
