The Syrian poet Dik al-Ginn distinguished himself during the Abbasid period of Arabic literature for telling in verses the tragic love story of which he was the protagonist. His story has travelled through time until the twentieth century. In 1916 another Syrian poet, Nasib 'Arida, a writer and editor native of Hims, composed and published on the pages of the literary magazine al-Funun, “The story of Dik al-Ginn al-Himsi”, drawing inspiration from the classical texts and readapting them in a modern way. The purpose of this paper is to present the poet Dik al-Ginn on two levels: one based on the study of the classical sources; the other on an analysis of the story told by Nasibb 'Arida. Special attention has been paid to poetry as moment of fusion between classic and modern literature, with the aim of studying its prosodic and metrical aspects.
