On 30th October 2008, the Department of Asian Studies at L‟Orientale Uni-versity of Naples organized a seminar in honour of Prof. Shyam Manohar Pandey to mark his retirement. The seminar was a tribute to his long career at the L‟Orientale University and the worldwide acclaim of his studies. Several scholars from Italian universities came to pay tribute to their esteemed colleague, as well as many students and friends who arrived to greet their much-respected teacher. The purpose of the seminar was to bring together Italian scholars of Modern Indian Literature to discuss the state of Indological studies in Italy and to propose new lines of research in the field of popular literature in the Indian Subcontinent, which has long been Prof. Pandey‟s major field of research. The essays in the present volume are based on the talks and discussions held at the Seminar and have been revised and updated. The proceedings are in Italian, which was the language of the seminar. In addition to the authors who took part in the seminar, several other scholars wished to contribute with a personal paper for this Complimentary Volume in honour of S.M. Pandey. These papers are both in English and Italian.
