The transformation and diversification of urban landscapes in the Southern Italy lead to identify new perspectives of analysis to investigate the characteristics assumed by the change. In this essay the key of the new retail geography is used to analyze that part of the metropolitan area of Naples in which a landscape increasingly dense, between the suburbs and the vast and labyrinthine conurbate metropolitan world, is enriched by the recent massive influx of large distribution, which produces a particular combination of between traditional commerce and innovative forms of distribution. The essay, focussing on the relationship between commerce, consumption and the city, offers an interpretation of the metropolitan Campania in transition from a hierarchical structure that had its heart in Naples, both in terms of urban and commercial, to post-hierarchical and networking forms of territorial organization.
