The paper analyzes the changes in the commercial geography in the historic center of Naples through the case of Decumani. After an introduction on the impact that the modernization of distribution and retail produces at the scale of the historic centers of European cities, the current commercial landscape of Decumani is analysed. In order to assess the most significant changes, the results of a fieldwork conducted five years ago among the retailers and artisans of the area are presented, and a conclusion is offered through the use of consumption as a additional variable in order to interpretate the changes in the relationship between retail and city in a so unique part of the old city center.
