This contribution focuses on the most important turning points that marked the history of industrial action conducted by the Italian trade union Cgil against the backdrop of the industrial relations in Italy, with specific reference to the post-WWII era and the 1970s. Both the postwar boosting Italian economy and the economic slowdown of the 1970s prompted the largest Italian trade union to reconsider and reshuffle the importance and limits to its industrial action in the light of the ongoing and unfinished structural transformations that featured the Italian capitalism over the post-war era.
