The linguistic interpretation of Le avventure di Cipollino, a classic of Italian children’s literature, is characterized by the use of phraseology. With reference to some central aspects of children’s acquisition of phraseology, the first part of the study intends to show how the author uses idiomatic set phrases in order to create an imaginative, ironic-witty, and at the same time complex novel, in which the child reader's understanding of the text is ensured by different embedding procedures while, at the same time, the role of the adult recipient is codified. Taking into account these findings, the second part of the study focuses on the analysis of Zwiebelchen, the German translation of Le avventure di Cipollino. In the light of its particular reception history in the GDR, Pan Rova’s (alias Heinz Riedt’s) different procedures to translate the Italian set phrases into German will be examined and it will be asked to what extent their expressiveness, figurative nature and stylistic marcs well as their complex functions are adequately reproduced in the target text.
